Members of the Garland Community Multicultural Commission reviewed a detailed calendar of spring outreach events on Thursday, March 20, 2025, and volunteered to represent the commission at several city and school meetings.
The calendar included upcoming Garland Independent School District (GISD) committee and regular board meetings, Garland Youth Council meetings, City Council work sessions and regular meetings, Concert on the Square and the city's April family event (listed as a "Trunk n' Hunt"/Easter event). Several commissioners said they would try to attend meetings in their districts and report back to the commission.
Commission members asked staff to add meeting locations and any collateral materials the commission could distribute. City staff confirmed there would be promotional items and that a tent has already been procured for commission use; staff also agreed to circulate photos of the tent before the next meeting. Commissioners repeatedly encouraged colleagues to "just go and listen and just report back," as one commissioner put it, so the commission could gather relevant information for its outreach work.
Volunteers named during the calendar review included members who said they would try to attend the Garland Youth Council meeting on March 25 and council work sessions on various dates in April and May. The commission discussed options for attending candidate forums and community open houses, and members agreed to coordinate representation and share post-event notes under the regular "committee and event reports" agenda item.
Staff asked commissioners to email if they planned to attend non-city-sponsored events so staff could prepare handouts and limited quantities of promotional material. Commissioners also asked staff to circulate a consolidated attendance list and to add park-cleanup dates to the calendar to allow members to participate in community cleanups.
The commission will revisit the calendar and attendance commitments at the next meeting and asked staff to email reminders for events taking place before the following month's meeting.
