Garland CMC accepts financial report, combines meal and event line items

The Garland Community Multicultural Commission voted to accept its financial report at a meeting Thursday, March 20, 2025, in the City Hall work session room.

City staff member Jennifer read the commission's budget breakdown and said the commission's annual allocation included $3,000 for meal expenses and $5,000 for event expenses, for a total budget of $8,000. She reported that the commission's current balance was $4,186 and that staff planned to combine the two line items into a single CMC line for future budgets. "We have a budget for $3,000 for the meal and event expenses for the CMC...we budgeted for $5,000," Jennifer said while reviewing the packet.

The commission discussed which scheduled events had already used funds and which remained potential expenses. Commissioners noted that the MLK event had already occurred and would not require future budget allocations, while other events such as Cinco de Mayo and Juneteenth would be considered as part of the commission's calendar and future planning.

A motion to accept the financial report was offered and seconded; the commission approved the motion by voice vote. The commission also heard that the city fiscal year begins Oct. 1, which affects how remaining funds will roll into the next budget cycle.

Commissioners asked staff to circulate details about any committed expenditures and to confirm how combined line items would be shown in future statements. Staff said they would provide updated summaries to the commission for planning upcoming events.

The commission moved on to committee reports and calendar planning after approving the financial report.
