Statewide push to expand beaver relocation and ‘living with beaver’ tools; council funds operational support

Staff from several DWR regions described related projects to expand beaver translocation, provide rapid response for nuisance beavers and pilot “living with beaver” tools such as pond levelers and culvert exclusion fencing. Presenters said beaver work yields outsized habitat benefits for wet meadow and riparian restoration but requires quarantine capacity, trained trappers and follow‑up materials to resolve conflicts near infrastructure.
Colton Taylor, impact analysis biologist for the Southeast Region, described a local request to buy pond‑levelers, hog panels and to hire a contractor for targeted fall trapping and relocation. Taylor requested $5,000 for a contractor and $5,000 for materials to stage on hand for nuisance work; the council approved that request.
Josie Siemens, Central Region impact analysis biologist, reviewed a statewide repair and relocation budget that funds quarantine and transport logistics with partner Utah State University’s Beaver Ecology and Relocation Center. Siemens said the Central Region asks were trimmed from prior years and that the region is coordinating quarantine upgrades and private‑trapper contracting; the council approved the Central Region request.
Separately, Shane Hill and partners reviewed the ongoing Beaver Ecology Relocation Center work at Utah State and a proposed partnership with ZooUtah to expand quarantine and outreach. Burke/USU will conduct trapping training and a new two‑year study to identify characteristics of successful release sites; the council approved continued operational support and outreach funding for USU and requested ZooUtah participation in a public‑facing quarantine/education site. Presenters highlighted an active schedule of releases and monitoring; several beavers arriving for quarantine were noted at the close of the meeting.
Council members repeatedly framed beaver work as cost‑effective habitat restoration that requires modest, ongoing operational funding, trained trappers and local mitigation materials to keep beavers on the landscape without damaging infrastructure. The council approved multiple related requests during the meeting.
