County staff told the Board of County Commissioners they will seek a formal resolution authorizing county leadership to file claims with the Kansas state treasurer’s unclaimed-property program to recover funds due to county departments.
Justin (county staff) explained that a number of county entities — including Sedgwick County EMS and the Register of Deeds — have unclaimed-property entries with the state treasurer. He said the county historically has not authorized staff to file claims on the county’s behalf and proposed a simple resolution to designate the county manager, the county CFO or their designee to make those claims and direct recovered funds to the proper county departments.
Why it matters: returning unclaimed property can restore funds to county programs and departments. Staff said the practice would streamline recovery and ensure money identified by the state treasurer reaches the appropriate county accounts.
Ending: Staff said they would present a resolution for board consideration to authorize the county manager, CFO or a designee to file claims with the state treasurer’s unclaimed-property process.
