Russell County officials at a March 20 special-call meeting voted to transfer funds that had been mistakenly coded to the county's account 83 (labelled "ABC") back into account 77 so the money would be available for the Department of Transportation quarter-end accounting.
The county staff member who identified the error said the checks had been coded incorrectly. "For some reason, I had a mental moment, and I put 83 on there, which is ABC, and it should have been 77," the staff member said. The staff member added that Candace moved the funds into the dispatch account after the error was noticed.
A motion to transfer the funds was made and approved by voice vote. Officials said the transfer was needed before month end because the funds relate to an important DOT quarter. No dollar amount was stated in the meeting record.
Meeting participants did not provide a formal written amount for the transfer during the recorded discussion, and the officer who made the motion did not specify a tally of individual votes other than calling for those "in favor" and receiving "aye" responses.
Next steps described in the meeting: staff will move the funds from the ABC (83) account into account 77 so the county's DOT quarter accounting is correct before month end.
