The Commissioner's Court of Grimes County voted Friday to impose a countywide burn ban for 90 days, effective at adjournment on March 21, 2025. The motion was made by Commissioner David Tullis and seconded by Commissioner Chad Mallett; the court approved the order and directed county staff to notify law enforcement and post public notices.
Court members said the ban responds to wildfire activity in nearby San Jacinto County and current dry, red-flag conditions. A court member noted the humidity forecast could rise and there is a "40% chance of rain on Sunday," but said forecasts have failed to produce rain in the past and that conditions nonetheless warrant a ban.
Under the order, the ban applies to unincorporated areas of Grimes County and, per interlocal agreements, will extend to participating cities "excluding Navasota," the court said. The court stated the ban will begin at the meeting's adjournment and continue for 90 days, with the court retaining authority to lift the ban earlier.
Commissioner Tullis moved that the court implement the burn ban; Commissioner Mallett seconded. The court voted to approve the order; members instructed county staff and emergency management to notify the sheriff's department, post notices on the county website and ask the Navasota Examiner and other local outlets to publicize the ban. The court also directed crews to change signage immediately.
During discussion, a court member said emergency-management personnel would be involved in posting notices and coordinating sign changes. A different member raised a question about notifying the sheriff's department so deputies and volunteer fire departments would be aware; the court confirmed that the sheriff and emergency management would be notified.
The court briefly addressed a local radio station's closure during the meeting; a court member said the timing was not related to the ban and that he had verified the station's closure was unrelated.
The court adjourned at 9:37 a.m.
