District plans partial roof replacements at Mott, Kettering and Crary using 2020 bond funds

Sydney Tippett, the district’s director of maintenance operations, briefed the board on three planned partial roof replacements to be performed during the summer at Mott High School, Kettering and Crary. The largest scope is at Mott, described as roughly 40,000 square feet covering the auxiliary gym, surrounding corridors and PAC lobby sections. Kettering’s work includes the cafeteria, a small section near the 300 wing, the pool area and a PAC lobby section; Crary’s work covers the 400 wing and life‑track area.
Tippett said these areas are leaking and were identified in a 2020–21 district roof assessment that laid out a multi‑year plan. She reported bids were received after a mandatory walkthrough; all three contracts were the low bids won by Royal Roofing, a contractor the district has used previously. Tippett said the district’s roof consultant (SME) reviewed references and would perform periodic site inspections and produce punch lists during construction.
Board members asked about performance and payment bonds, and Tippett explained bonds are required to provide the district recourse if work fails to meet contract standards; SME will perform several inspections during and after completion. Trustees noted a large bid discrepancy for Mott between Royal and another bidder, Newton Crane Roofing; Tippett said Newton Crane’s higher bid reflected pricing assumptions tied to a 2026 schedule and anticipated price increases, while Royal's bid was lower and the district judged it able to meet the summer schedule.
Tippett said the roofs are built‑up tar roofs, many installed in the 1990s; the PAC areas are newer (circa 2002). She confirmed the dollars for the work come from the 2020 bond. The item was presented as information; the board did not take a formal vote at the meeting but discussed oversight and scheduling.
