Montebello previews spring recreation, boosts lifeguard pay and launches youth employment interviews

City staff updated the Parks and Recreation Commission on a range of spring programs, recruitment efforts and the city's youth employment program.
Staff reported the sports ad hoc committee met Feb. 4 to review spring seasons, field allocations and how Montebello Baseball Association (which has added softball) shares fields. Staff said practices and games are held at Grama Ray Park, Reggie Hollyfield, Potrero Park and other city facilities; City Park remains under renovation.
On aquatics, staff said the regular season will open in June and that in-ground pool lighting was being installed to allow more evening classes, rentals and high school use. "We are installing in light in ground pool lighting at the aquatic center," Staff member Steph said, adding that the pool had been used by schools through the winter and that lighting work paused some activity before completion.
Staff said the city adjusted hourly rates for part-time positions, including lifeguards, during the midyear budget process in February to reflect minimum-wage changes and surrounding-city pay scales. Staff characterized the adjustment as intended to improve recruitment for lifeguards and instructors.
On youth soccer and other volunteer-driven programs, staff said volunteers coach after a background check and in-house training; if volunteers are not available, staff will coach to keep programs running.
The youth employment program has received 75 applications. Staff said a pre-interview workshop is scheduled March 27 with interviews March 31 through April 2 and that participants will start in mid-June, working across departments including recreation, finance, police, transit and fire.
Staff also noted the "Connect with Rec" winter-spring guide is available online and in limited print at city hall and the senior center, and invited the public to the annual Eggstravaganza on Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Montebello City Park.
During commission remarks, Joshua Yo introduced himself as the new commissioner for District 4. Commissioner Carden offered thanks and farewell remarks for departing commissioners James Santana and Sylvia Takayama.
Administrative action: The commission approved the minutes for Nov. 21, 2024, and Dec. 19, 2024, by voice vote; the transcript did not record a roll-call tally or the mover'second by name.
