Board approves district-wide radios funded by PCCD grant to improve campus safety communications

The Southmoreland School District board approved the purchase of district-wide radios and supporting components from Westcom Wireless, paid for through the district's 2024–25 PCCD (Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency) grant.
Board members and facilities staff said the new system will include repeaters and equipment that supports cross-campus communications for security, counseling and administrative staff. Facilities staff explained donated radios the district previously received from local fire departments are antiquated and do not provide the campus-wide coverage the new system will provide.
Officials said six of the new radios will be able to connect directly to Westmoreland County 911; the county-connected radios are intended for use only by school police officers. Board members described the purchase as an efficiency and safety upgrade compared with relying on multiple cell phones or older radios. The motion to approve the purchase was adopted by voice vote.
