Board approves new middle-school electives and two high-school positions tied to grant funding

The Southmoreland School District board approved a slate of new elective course descriptions for Southmoreland Middle School and authorized the creation of two new professional teaching positions at the high school, contingent on continued adequacy grant funding.

The new high-school positions—family and consumer sciences and media and communications—were presented as dependent on continued adequacy-grant funding; the job descriptions state the roles are contingent on that funding continuing. Board materials and presenters said the courses and positions are intended to meet student demand and expand elective offerings.

Board members asked whether the new middle-school electives would interfere with core academic instruction; district leaders said the courses will be offered during elective blocks and will not reduce time for core subjects. Supporters framed the changes as part of a broader attendance and engagement strategy: district staff said offering classes that match students' interests is intended to encourage school attendance and engagement.
