Waukegan schools warn students may be excluded Oct. 15 without updated immunizations; BPAC meeting, budget update announced

Nikos Halitakis, director of communications for Waukegan Public Schools, said the district is reminding families that "state law requires that students have updated immunizations and medical exams on file to attend school beginning Wednesday, Oct. 15."

The reminder is part of the district's weekly update for the week of Oct. 6 and advises that "students without those required records or proof of an upcoming appointment may be excluded from class," Halitakis said. Families were told to submit records or an appointment card to their school nurse before the deadline; the district said schools are coordinating with families and community partners to provide resources and clinics.

The message also invited English-learner families to the Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee, or BPAC, meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Brett Theater at Waukegan High School's Brookside Campus. The committee will hold its annual election of officers; families can reserve a spot online or return sign-up forms sent home with students. The district listed contact information as "Dr. Campos at bcompos@wps60.org."

Earlier in the week the district hosted a live presentation on the fiscal year 2026 budget to update the community on the district's financial position. Halitakis said the presentation "underscored our continued commitment to transparency and accountability" and that a recording of the presentation, in English and Spanish, and presentation materials are available on the district website.

Halitakis closed the update by noting the district will be closed Monday in observance of Indigenous Peoples and Immigrants Day. "We hope everyone enjoys a safe and relaxing long weekend," he said.
