Department on Aging outlines fall-prevention, senior-safety and meal-program activity; buys refrigeration unit

Leslie Krantz, deputy director at the Jackson County Department on Aging, summarized recent and upcoming programs and an equipment purchase at the Human Services Committee meeting.
Krantz said the department is hosting a fall-prevention event organized by WellWise Services, a senior safety seminar with American 1 Credit Union fraud fighters on Sept. 23, and a vital-shred event for seniors. The department will run a diabetes PATH workshop Oct. 2–Nov. 6 and reported results of its annual exercise survey: 221 participants in the grant year, an average participant age of 73, an eldest participant aged 93, 65% regular attendance and 93% reporting that classes help them live active, independent lives.
Krantz also said community volunteers from Eaton Company will pack more than 600 emergency meals for Meals on Wheels on Sept. 18. She reported the department will replace a reach-in refrigeration unit purchased in February 2009 and awarded the lowest bid for the replacement to Stanford Smith for $7,129.
Commissioners received the report by voice vote.
