Waverly students showcase robotic "mech animal," head to state competition

Waverly Elementary School students and their principal appeared before the Abington Heights School District board March 5 to demonstrate a robotic "mech animal" they built for Odyssey of the Mind and to report a regional championship and advancement to the state competition.
The team, mostly Waverly students with two students from South Abington, performed for the board and described both the mechanical features and the script they developed. "Our team was very successful at their regional competition, and they're moving on to The States coming up in April," Principal Missus Leonard told the board.
Students explained elements of the performance and the engineering behind the prop. One student said, "I made the robot, and I'm holding it right now. So and it works. I put it together, and I welded it." Another described using magnets for a pickup trick and explained basic magnetic attraction: "If a negative goes to a positive, they will attract." The students also described instruments and stage effects they built, and noted they used a penguin character "that nobody else used" for originality.
Board members presented certificates to the students after the demonstration. The presentation drew praise from board members who thanked the students and school staff for preparing the performance.
The remarks occurred during the board's regular meeting; no formal action was required or taken on the presentation.
