City staff report $1.3 billion in 2024 construction valuation; strong single-family and industrial activity

The city’s development services director presented the annual 2024 development activity report to the McKinney City Council, citing about $1.3 billion in new-construction valuation for 2024 and robust single-family permitting.

Michael Quint, executive director of development services, told the council the 2024 total new-construction valuation was roughly $1.3 billion, down modestly from 2023’s $1.4 billion figure that he said was inflated by a large multifamily permit in 2023. He said single-family residential permitting reached 2,310 building permits — the most since February 2017 — and that the city’s nonresidential new construction valuation was about $485 million. Quint said industrial development was a key driver of nonresidential growth, with roughly $92 million in industrial nonexempt construction in the reported period and three of the top five large nonexempt projects classified as industrial.

Quint highlighted recent completed and ongoing public projects including the new city hall (temporary certificate of occupancy issued October 2024), improvements to Wilmeth Road (opened July 2024 with remaining roundabouts expected to be finished imminently), and Lot Howell Parkway (development agreement with Honey Creek to extend lanes by 2027). He also pointed council members to an interactive development activity map and annual report available on the city website for project-level details.
