The Ojai Arts Commission discussed a conservation assessment of the city’s public art collection and identified the skate‑park wheel (referred to in discussion as the “Big Red Roller”) as a priority for repair.
Staff liaison James told the commission the conservation assessment, completed in the previous fiscal year, cataloged the condition of public artworks and recommended repairs and maintenance priorities. Commissioners said they had delayed public release of the conservators’ findings pending a joint meeting with the City Council to present results to a broader audience.
One commission member renewed a request for a joint meeting with City Council to discuss the assessment and to authorize or coordinate conservation steps for the skate‑park wheel; the commission asked the chair to follow up with the deputy city clerk and the mayor to set that meeting. A commissioner asked that the wheel be placed on the next commission agenda with images and the artist’s original maquette to show the artwork’s original appearance and current condition.
Commissioners and staff also discussed moving forward on smaller conservation work that can be completed within the current fiscal-year budget and coordinating with contract conservators. Staff said final approval on transfer of public‑art funds from a developer (Dale Robillard) is pending guidance and an occupancy determination from the Community Development Department (CDD). Commissioners emphasized they will prepare a conservation plan and identify items that can be repaired quickly within the available budget.
No formal vote was taken; the commission agreed to seek a joint meeting with City Council and to add the skate‑park wheel to a future agenda for review and potential conservation planning.
