Public comments spur review of proposed utility van purchase; administration asked to check state contract pricing

A resident, Sean O'Neil, used the public comment period to urge the board to use state purchasing contracts when acquiring a new utility van for facilities, saying he obtained a VIN‑matched quote roughly $3,000 less than the district’s listed price. He said the district’s packets showed a quote of $52,087. The resident said he could get the same specifications through the state bid for about $50,006.42.

During the facilities/vehicle agenda item, Facilities staff and the superintendent explained the district had solicited local quotes and had not used the state purchasing contract for that particular bid. Facilities staff said they had sought quotes across several dealers and the price shown is live; administration acknowledged they were not previously aware of the state contract option and agreed to research the state procurement route.

Board members instructed administration to explore state contract pricing and report updated quotes and timing at the next meeting in two weeks. Administration noted the two HVAC technicians share a vehicle and that a second van would reduce inefficiencies for trades staff working across buildings; board members asked whether the need required immediate purchase or whether the district could use a state contract and return with numbers. Administration agreed to investigate and provide updated pricing and schedule options.

No binding procurement decision was made at the meeting; the board asked staff to return with price comparisons and availability for a decision at the April meeting.
