Commissioners adopted Seward County safety manual; fire district reports recent activity

Seward County commissioners approved a county safety manual at their most recent regular meeting, county officials said at the town-hall, and staff described fire-district updates and recent wildfire response.

County representatives said the safety manual is intended to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses, lower workers’ compensation claims and reduce insurance costs by establishing hazard-identification and prevention practices. The commission approved the safety manual at a regular meeting on the prior Monday; meeting remarks did not include a roll-call vote tally.

Town-hall presenters reviewed fire-district information posted on the district website, including historical acres burned (312 acres in 2021; 390 in 2022; 702 in 2023; 607 in 2024, and 26 acres currently reported for the year). Officials described the department’s staffing and assets pages, department financial summaries as a taxing entity, online fire reports and a gallery of photos.

Staff recounted a recent RK1 fire fought on a very windy day. The fire chief judged that available county resources were sufficient and declined to call mutual aid, in part because conditions made mutual aid risky; commissioners said they visited the scene to observe and maintain communication without disrupting fire operations. Presenters praised the fire chief and crews for their response.
