Committee clears bill requiring insurers to provide policy copies on request

Senate File 2420, presented March 20, 2025, would require insurers to deliver a copy of the insured contract (the full policy) to a policyholder upon request or after issuance of the policy. Senator Seaburger described difficulty obtaining a full policy copy and said she only obtained her contract after filing a complaint with the Department of Commerce.
Aaron Cocking, president and CEO of the Insurance Federation of Minnesota, said he and industry members were surprised this was not already standard practice and that most carriers already provide the full policy to customers; the federation worked with Senator Seaburger to craft language the industry could accept. Cocking told the committee that members had no objections to the proposed requirement.
The committee accepted the A1 author's amendment and laid Senate File 2420 over for further consideration.
