The Comal County Commissioners Court on Thursday read and approved a proclamation recognizing March 2025 as Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Comal County.
The proclamation noted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's estimate that "roughly 1 in 6 children in the United States between the ages of 3 and 17 have one or more developmental disabilities," referenced the Americans with Disabilities Act and called on the county's residents, advocates and organizations to work to ensure equitable treatment and access to resources.
A Rock House Foundation representative thanked the court and described the foundation's work connecting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to services. The representative said, "I just wanted to say thank you, for all the folks here in Comal County that support our Rock House Foundation as we work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to help them procure opportunities to be able to do and be the very best that they can." The representative also noted the proclamation coincides with a national observance related to Down syndrome.
The court voted to approve the proclamation after a motion by Commissioner Webb and a second by Commissioner Crownover; the motion carried by voice vote.
