The Mayor's Youth Council's mental health committee presented plans at the March 18 meeting for initiatives timed to Mental Health Awareness Month in May, including a wellness-card distribution, a two-episode podcast, a social media campaign and participation in NAMIWalks on May 17 at Sam Houston Park.
Misha, who leads the mental health committee, said the group set an ambitious goal of producing 1,000 wellness cards to distribute to targeted groups such as custodians, health-care workers and first responders. She said the committee hopes to complete cards and distribution planning in April so the materials are ready for May activities.
Ms. Jackson, the Youth Council coordinator, told members the council ordered 1,500 mini cards that were the wrong size and that the group is now seeking bulk vendors or nonprofit donations to reduce costs. She advised that future material requests use a standardized form for procurement and city approval through the Department of Neighborhoods resource portal.
The group also plans a short podcast series—one episode on mental health topics and a second on voter education—and a social media push of resources for school counselors to share. Council members said they will attempt to include Spanish-language cards and requested volunteers for sign-making ahead of NAMIWalks.
