Assembly adopts resolution designating March 16–22 as Down Syndrome Awareness Week

The California State Assembly on Thursday adopted Assembly Concurrent Resolution 41, designating March 16–22, 2025, as Down Syndrome Awareness Week and March 21, 2025, as California Down Syndrome Day.
Assemblymember Carlos A. Patterson introduced the resolution, saying the state has made progress improving quality of life for people with Down syndrome through medical advances, better access to care and greater societal acceptance. Patterson said the CDC estimates Down syndrome occurs in about 1 in 640 births and urged Californians to learn about and support local activities and organizations that serve people with Down syndrome.
The measure drew expressions of welcome from members and guests in the gallery, including representatives of support organizations such as Gigi’s Playhouse. The clerk reported 64 members added as coauthors; the resolution was then adopted by voice vote.
The resolution is ceremonial and urges increased public awareness and support for employment, classroom inclusion and community participation for people with Down syndrome. No statutory or funding changes were included in the text of the resolution.
