Mississippi Senate honors DeSoto County deputy Brian Brock for wrong-way crash rescue

The Mississippi Senate honored Deputy Brian Brock of the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department on the Senate floor after lawmakers read a resolution praising his actions in stopping a wrong-way driver on an interstate.

Senator Parker asked that the chamber read the resolution honoring Brock, saying, “Deputy Brian Brock of the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department pulled in front of a wrong way driver on the interstate to save the lives of others and survive the crash.” The clerk then read the resolution and the Senate recognized Brock and members of the DeSoto County command staff in the galleries.

DeSoto County Sheriff Sheriff Tuggle addressed the chamber and described Brock’s actions as extraordinary. “The actions of Sergeant Brock ... are something that is just short of a miracle,” Tuggle said, adding his gratitude to Brock and his family. He emphasized the sheriff’s office view that Brock exemplified a willingness to “put your life on the line for people we've never met.”

Brock told the Senate he was grateful for the support he has received from his agency and family. “I'm truly grateful for all the love and support that I received. It's not just me. It's the agency that I work for, our command staff,” Brock said, and when asked if he would act the same way again he replied, “yes, I will do it again.”

The recognition on the Senate floor included remarks from county officials and the formal presentation of the resolution to Brock. No formal roll-call vote was recorded on the recognition in the transcript; the item was presented and the chamber proceeded with other calendar business.

The Senate’s recognition followed introductions and other ceremonial items during the session, which also included tributes to local schools and community organizations earlier in the day.
