Polk County commissioner says state Department of Corrections budget hearing signals possible increase

"This is really just a basic service that is under serious duress throughout the state," the commissioner said, describing the testimony given at the hearing. He added that the hearing involved intense debate: "It was a bloody fight all the way down to signed Ivette. Oh, yes. Because ways and means has got my perspective, they've got so much piled up in front of them."
The commissioner said the message from testimony had been heard but that it was unclear how much additional funding, if any, the Legislature would provide. No formal county action or vote on the Department of Corrections budget was taken at the Polk County meeting.
The remarks came during the meeting’s non-agenda updates; the commissioner characterized the budget matter as ongoing and said county officials would continue to advocate for full funding.
