Council continues rink/community‑building decision; schedules plan review with architect and contractors

Council members continued deliberations on a proposed community building and relocated ice rink, declining to make a final funding decision until they review more detailed plans, dimensions and contractor estimates.

Several councilors said they are largely aligned on the project’s concept but need more certainty on key items before committing city funds. Concerns centered on whether the building is the right size for community needs, whether a basement or additional storage is feasible given subsurface constraints, and whether the project as currently drawn would deliver the expected community benefit.

Council members asked staff to convene a focused meeting with the project architect (Rob) and potential contractors (including B.D. Bush) so councilors can examine fully dimensioned plans, sample layouts showing scale, cost takeoffs and an estimate for a basement if one is being considered. One council member suggested the plans presented in the packet were not fully detailed and lacked dimensions, making it hard to approve moving or expanding the rink. Another said, “Would you all want to sit down with Rob and have a discussion about the plan?” Staff agreed to organize a meeting; council members said they want that session before deciding whether to proceed in the current construction season or to defer action until next year.

The council also made a procedural motion to continue the agenda item (so staff can complete the requested information and the group can meet with the architect and bidders). That continuation was seconded and carried.
