Long-range plan update: Avon's HVAC assessments, chiller repairs and Engle office furniture costs discussed

District facilities staff provided a long-range plan update that covered HVAC assessments, chiller service contracts and repairs, and furniture budgeting for the new Engle Education Center district office.
Consolidated Engineering completed field verification of HVAC equipment locations for the intermediate school, PLE (elementary) and AGI (intermediate/high campus) and reported AGI chiller lead times at approximately 16 weeks. Staff said they will coordinate procurement to be ready for the cooling season. The district also reported the PLE intercom work is complete and Siemens replaced the building'as fire panel.
At the intermediate school the district is pursuing a chiller rebuild (compressor purchases) rather than an extended rental because repair availability and parts make a rebuild more cost-effective than paying continued rental fees. The district expects cost savings from purchasing refrigerant via the CCIU for that work. For the high school, the district solicited quotes for a chiller service contract and intends to present a competitive quote to the board.
On the Engle Education Center district office move, staff said they budgeted roughly $100,000 for furniture but three vendor proposals ranged from about $87,000 to more than $280,000; staff plan to order the bare-minimum furniture (desk, chair, bookcase) to stay close to budget and will use state cooperative contracts (CoStars/KPN) rather than an in-house bid. Staff said they are meeting with department heads to trim optional items and that some existing furniture will be repurposed where feasible.
Staff also said district leaders obtained approximately $1 million from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to help offset costs of the HVAC recommissioning project; because of the grant timeline they expect to accelerate project spending to capture available funding.
