Families urge Roseville to plan supportive housing for adults with developmental disabilities

Laurel Peterson, a Roseville resident and parent of an adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), told the City Council on March 19 that she and other aging caregivers are worried about housing options for their children once they can no longer provide care.
“I want to ensure that my son will be taken care of and kept safe,” Peterson said during public comment, describing her son’s severe autism, ADHD and bipolar disorder and explaining why family caregivers are seeking secure, affordable housing and supported living options.
Kim Ziering, speaking on behalf of Disability Housing Alliance, told the council the group represents families across the Sacramento area and urged Roseville to consider dedicated housing models and supports for adults with IDD as the city plans housing and services. Ziering said Alta Regional Center is the local regional center and that a previous estimate placed the center’s caseload at about 30,000 consumers; she said wait lists for creative housing models are long or closed and that there are no dedicated set-aside affordable units for IDD consumers in Placer County.
Why it matters: Speakers said adults with IDD are overwhelmingly housed with family caregivers today and that a growing population of older caregivers needs planning and housing solutions to prevent homelessness or unsafe placements when caregivers can no longer provide care.
What council heard: Advocates asked the city to include adults with IDD among populations prioritized in housing planning and to consider partnerships with regional center providers and affordable-housing developers. Councilmembers acknowledged the comments during the public-comment portion of the meeting; no specific council action was taken on the topic at that meeting.
