Humboldt City board extends superintendent contract through 2029, adds one week paid vacation

The Humboldt City School Board voted to approve a contract extension for Superintendent Janice Epperson that begins July 1, 2025, and runs through June 30, 2029, and includes one additional week of paid vacation added by the board.

The board said the extension aims to provide continuity for the district’s leadership at a critical time. Board members who spoke in favor emphasized Epperson’s responsiveness to school concerns and recommended the additional vacation week as a non-salary accommodation.

Superintendent Janice Epperson’s proposed two-year renewal (noting a multi-year extension in the motion) was on the meeting agenda and moved for approval. During discussion a board member asked that the contract, if approved, include an extra paid week of vacation for Epperson; the board debated that request and then voted to approve the contract with that addition.

The board’s chair confirmed the matter was put to a vote after a member called the question. The motion passed by voice vote; the chair stated, “Ayes have it. There are no nays.” No roll-call tally was read into the record.
