Barton principal highlights reading gains, staffing and meal service statistics

Shannon Taylor, principal of Barton School, told the Henderson County Board of Education that Barton is the smallest school in the county and described staff experience levels, student reading progress and the school’s use of incentives.
Taylor said Barton has 20 teachers and 16 additional staff. She told the board that of the 20 teachers, seven have three or fewer years of experience, four have five or six years, five have between 10 and 20 years, and four have more than 20 years. "So combined, 11, over 50% of our teachers have 6 years or less," Taylor said.
Taylor highlighted the school’s use of the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. She reported that during March (excluding weekends), students read 2,238 books, totaling about 2,600,000 words, and averaged 98 minutes of reading per day outside school. "The Accelerated Reader program is to improve reading skills and comprehension by encouraging students to read independently," she said.
Taylor thanked cafeteria manager Jean and the cafeteria staff, saying they had prepared 29,427 lunches and 29,607 breakfasts this school year. "Jean leads her team with enthusiasm and passion," Taylor said.
Taylor also said the district restored MyON access for students and thanked board member Mr. Beecham for the support. She told the board that 206 students will be rewarded for reaching their third nine-week AR goal and that the school’s goal is to expand participation in its 25-club reading recognition.
