Mr. Walker, a district staff member who presented the measure, said the law provides a one-time bonus “of no less than $2,000 to public school teachers in the state,” and that local boards must pass a resolution to accept the funds. "This is in many ways just a procedural vote that we attest as Board that we will spend all of those monies allocated to us for teacher promises exclusively for teacher promises," Walker said.
The board discussed who qualifies for the payment. Walker said the district has 349 certified staff and that the bonus would apply to about 209 employees, including classroom teachers, librarians and counselors; it does not apply to administrators. "It does not cover our certified staff" beyond the listed categories, Walker said, adding that instructional coaches are not included at this time but other districts expect the state could expand eligibility later.
Board members asked about timing and fiscal impact. The finance director, Mr. Ward, clarified that the bonus will not be paid in the current fiscal year and that payment is expected after July. The resolution must be submitted to the state by June 1, 2025.
A motion and second were made to adopt the resolution. The board approved the resolution by voice vote; the record shows the motion carried but no roll-call tallies were provided in the meeting transcript.
Board members and staff said the resolution commits the district to use any state funds received for the intended teacher bonuses and that no local funds are required to accept the state payment.
