At its March 19 meeting, the Angola Historic Preservation Commission discussed updates to the city facade grant program, agreed to serve as judges for a downtown photo contest, and reviewed upcoming Indiana Landmarks workshops that commissioners say could benefit local property owners.
Staff reported that the city increased facade grant amounts and that the updated grant information has been uploaded to the city website. Commissioners said at least four or five organizations have already requested facade grant information and staff expects follow-up requests in coming months.
Commissioners reviewed a photo contest organized for historic-preservation month. Staff said submissions will be digital (JPEG) and judged in three categories: color photos, black and white, and an 18-and-under youth category. Organizers set entry criteria that photos depict subjects at least 50 years old, exclude photographs of only natural elements, and show locations in the county. Winners will be displayed and may be used on commission social media and in future projects; staff suggested winners’ buildings could be added to walking tours.
Commissioners also discussed low-cost workshops offered by Indiana Landmarks — exterior carpentry and masonry repair sessions scheduled in April and May — and considered whether to promote those sessions to local building owners. Several commissioners proposed investigating interest, potential costs to bring a workshop locally, and whether contractors with specialized skills could be identified to work on local projects. Staff said she would circulate workshop details and contact information for partner organizations that refer qualified contractors.
