The Hermosa Beach Public Works director reported three short updates to the commission: LA County Library ADA upgrades at the Hermosa Beach facility, recent strandings of marine mammals linked to domoic acid, and the nearing completion of Cal Water’s Bayview water-main replacement.
Library ADA work: staff said LA County Library started construction earlier in the week on ADA upgrades to restrooms and automated doors at the Hermosa Beach branch. The library plans to remain open during construction, and staff said any closures would be minimal (one to two days) only if a water shutoff is required. Parking impacts are limited to one or two spaces in the City Hall parking lot; temporary restroom facilities are staged on the building’s south side.
Marine mammal strandings: staff alerted the commission that a domoic-acid event in coastal waters has coincided with an uptick in sea lions washing ashore. Staff advised the public not to approach stranded marine mammals and to keep at least a 50-foot distance. The Marine Mammal Care Center hotline number was provided during the meeting for reporting stranded animals; the city is coordinating with the Marine Mammal Care Center and LA County Lifeguards and expects the event could last several weeks.
Bayview water-main replacement: staff said Cal Water’s multi-month water-main work on Bayview Drive (Second to Eighth Street) has concluded major construction and crews were finishing box-cover adjustments and coordinating final resurfacing. Staff said final grind-and-overlay resurfacing is tentatively scheduled for the week of April 7, with neighborhood notifications to follow once dates are confirmed.
Staff invited questions and said more information would be provided to residents affected by the projects as schedules are confirmed.
