The Harrisonburg Housing Authority authorized staff on March 19 to proceed with contract negotiations to acquire real property for affordable housing after a closed session held under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.
The board met in closed session under the authority of Virginia Code 2.2-3711(A)(3), which permits discussion of acquisition of real property for public purposes. A roll-call vote to convene the closed session was recorded with commissioners responding in the affirmative; one commissioner was absent for that vote.
After returning to open session, a motion to proceed with contract negotiations and acquisition was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The board directed staff to carry out all contract negotiations and to return with updates, including any required city council calendar dates for approvals.
Meeting minutes show the closed-session roll call naming commissioners who voted to convene the closed session. After the closed session the board approved proceeding with acquisition negotiations without additional public details about the parcel or seller in open session.
Staff said they will notify the board when the process is finalized and when a date is scheduled with Harrisonburg City Council, which may be required for final approvals.
