Council liaisons report: parks stewardship, arts projects, summer market planning and expanded human services coordination

Several Lynnwood council members used the work session to provide liaison updates on commissions and volunteer-driven projects across the city, including parks stewardship, arts programming, market planning and human services coordination.

Council President Coelho and Council Member Hurst highlighted a South Lynnwood Park stewardship project led by the city's urban forester, with volunteers removing invasive plants and planting native species. "If you wanna see the impact, go to Southland Wood Park, start from the northwest corner of it and start walking east and you'll see just a tremendous difference," Coelho said, noting substantial volunteer involvement.

The Arts Commission is developing events and public-art projects. Coelho said the commission is planning "Lynnwood Idol," a youth singing contest for grades six through twelve, with finalists to perform at a summer Celebrate event. The commission is also working on murals for the Community Justice Center and is in ongoing consultation with Snohomish tribal representatives about culturally respectful design.

Coelho and other council members discussed plans for a summer market near the light rail station. The initiative aims to leverage proximity to transit but has encountered coordination problems with Sound Transit and the private owner of adjacent property, Merlo & Geier. "They're just not being able to move forward fast enough," Coelho said. The commission is also evaluating alternative sites, including an event center parking lot.

Council Member Braskemia reported on the Human Services Commission and on Kyle Ward, the city's human services coordinator. Braskemia said Ward's position was funded with ARPA money and has become a full-time role under the recent budget, and credited Ward with building partnerships and programs from the ground up. The Human Services Commission has engaged nonprofits such as Cocoon House and has coordinated services for homeless youth through a WINGS partnership. Braskemia also noted the mobile veterinary outreach coordinated through the city.

Other liaison reports included the Planning Commission's focus on the comprehensive plan update, unified development code changes, housing design standards and retail cannabis, and the History & Heritage Board's grant-funded project to digitize city documents and an award for a historical film.

Ending: Council members proposed continuing regular liaison reports — some suggested monthly updates at Wednesday work sessions — to keep the council and public informed about volunteer boards and interagency partnerships.
