The Saratoga Springs Design Review Board on March 19 approved a proposal to build a carriage house, detached garage, small pool and a covered pavilion at 44 Fifth Avenue, following changes the applicants made in response to prior board feedback.
The revised plans showed the carriage house moved closer to the lane (reduced setback from roughly 24.5 to about 20 feet) so the property can retain a small surface parking area, a recessed pergola/entrance feature on East Avenue, a 48-inch fence to match a neighboring property, stone pillars and low stone walls with plantings. The applicants said they will attempt to preserve existing trees along the property edge where possible.
Board members said the revisions addressed earlier concerns and praised the design and materials. Several members suggested the pergola be an arched or segmental form to complement the home's front entrance; the board recorded a notation encouraging a segmental or elliptical (not full semicircular) arch form. Materials called for stucco and wood trim to match the main house; the applicant said shingles and trim will be selected to match existing colors and profiles as closely as feasible.
Motion to approve the plans as submitted passed with no recorded opposition. The board noted one design suggestion (segmented or elliptical arch for the pergola) and left final material selection to the applicant as indicated on the plans.
