Commissioner Jordan Villarreal delivered a brief farewell during the March 19 meeting of the Denton Planning and Zoning Commission and received recognition from fellow commissioners and staff for more than three years of service.
Tina (planning staff) and Chair Pruitt summarized Villarreal’s contributions, noting his involvement with the 2022 comprehensive plan adoption, the mobility plan, the Southeast Denton area plan and multiple development code amendments. Staff highlighted his focus on neighborhood preservation, short‑term rental regulations, horizontal multifamily living rules, reasonable accommodations and attention to impacts on single‑family neighborhoods.
Villarreal told the commission he was honored to serve and said, in part, “I will always fight for the community first,” and later explained his departure: “I cannot execute my duties here while also working at the state Capitol during the legislative session.” He thanked council members, commissioners, and staff for the opportunity to serve and said he hoped city management could avoid forced resignations for future commissioners with similar schedule conflicts.
The commission presented Villarreal with a certificate of appreciation and staff encouraged participation in a community block party the following day at Fred Moore Park to continue outreach in Southeast Denton.
No formal action was required for the recognition; the remarks and recognition were part of the commission’s concluding items.
