Detention center asks for training-sergeant reclassification, medical budget increase and transport van

Detention center management presented a mostly flat budget that includes a personnel reclassification (training specialist to sergeant), added maintenance and medical expense requests, and capital requests for a transport van and an upgraded fire alarm system.

Leadership said requested salary changes include reclassifying the training specialist position as a sergeant to reflect supervisory duties and training requirements. The department asked for increased budget authority for building maintenance (roof, interior doors and ongoing repairs) and for professional services to cover rising off-site medical bills; presenters explained the county must pay hospital bills in some cases where detainees’ Medicaid benefits lapse during incarceration.

Capital requests included a transport van to manage court transfers when the new judicial complex is fully online (the department noted the current magistrate court is no longer adjacent to the facility) and a vehicle to replace an aging patrol/transport unit. Staff also asked for funding for radio and safety equipment replacements and for upgrades to the facility’s fire alarm system in older building sections.

Commissioners asked whether the detention center attempts to re-enroll detainees in Medicaid and whether discharge planners connect released individuals to services; presenters said staff work to enroll eligible people and that a discharge planner helps coordinate services for release. The commission will review the detention requests further during the preliminary budget stage.
