Marshall Elementary teacher urges Spring ISD to prioritize employees’ children in school-choice decisions

Lacey Curry, a physical-education teacher at Marshall Elementary, addressed the board during the public-participation portion of the March 18 meeting and asked Spring ISD to prioritize employees’ children in school-choice assignments.
Curry said she has been a district employee for 11 of her 23 years of teaching and that her family is active in the Spring ISD community. She told trustees her son was recently denied placement at a school she believed would be best for him and said that other area districts (she named Klein, Humble and others) give employees priority when assigning school-choice requests.
Curry urged the board to adopt a policy that would give district employees preference—subject to basic qualifications such as parental involvement and recommendations—arguing such a policy would help retain teachers and other staff. She said some employees leave for districts that offer employee-preference policies and that uncertainty about school placement can affect employees’ decisions to remain with Spring ISD.
