Library staff and board members outlined a series of outreach and programming activities that will take place in the coming weeks and months.
Juan Pablo (staff) presented newly acquired titles selected for the 2025 Southwest Books of the Year list curated by Pima County Public Library; the collection includes children’s and adult titles that will circulate to branches. “These annual list... highlights outstanding works that delve into our unique culture and history and landscapes of the Southwest,” Juan Pablo said.
Member Francisco Padilla updated the board on early‑childhood education events tied to National Library Week and First Things First. Padilla said First Things First’s annual young child community event will be April 12 at Calabasas School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the library will coordinate related activities for families with children ages 0–5 during National Library Week.
Director Danica reviewed recent Love of Reading Week activities — staff visited Mountain View School for story times, hosted pre‑K tours, and showed a Lorax movie with concessions — and previewed an upcoming Mexican Consulate event scheduled for March 20 that will distribute Spanish‑language books. Danica also said she was nominated to serve on the Amigos board, a nonprofit consortium offering cataloging and interlibrary resources; she said the position will not cost the city or county and carries a three‑year term.
The Friends of the Library will meet after the board meeting; Juanita Havel said the Friends recently spent two grants totaling $20,000 on programs and are pursuing a Penguin Random House grant to purchase children’s books for the Nogales branch.
Why it matters: The programs illustrate the libraries’ role in early‑childhood education, bilingual outreach and regional library cooperation through interlibrary consortia and grant‑funded efforts.
