Council approves application for Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority grant to resurface courts with $30,000 local match

The Fountain Hills Town Council unanimously approved staff’s request to submit an application to the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority (AZSTA) for resurfacing of municipal tennis and basketball courts.
Parks director Kevin Snipes told the council the town would request $90,000 from AZSTA under a typical one‑third matching grant program, with the town providing a $30,000 match from the facility replacement fund. “The acrylic surfacing … is designed to last about 8 to 10 years,” Snipes said, and staff is seeing cracking and flaking that creates safety concerns.
The application, due at month’s end, would cover resurfacing of the tennis courts at 4 Peaks and Golden Eagle and the basketball court at Golden Eagle. Snipes said the town would complete the work within one year if the grant is awarded.
Councilman Skillecorn made the motion to approve the application; the motion passed on a roll call with all members voting in favor.
No additional appropriation was made at the meeting; the town manager said the proposed $30,000 match is already planned in the facility replacement fund and staff will return with final project details if the grant is awarded.
