CLUeS requests $4M to expand Latino-focused workforce training and CDL programs

Sen. Program scope and past funding: Ruby Lee, CLUeS president, told the committee that CLUeS is a Latino-led nonprofit that has operated for more than 40 years and that prior appropriations in the current biennium included $2,000,000. Fiscal staff summarized CLUeS’s past biennial support and said the new request would direct half of the funds to Greater Minnesota.
Participant outcomes: Jennifer Mendoza, career development navigator in Wilmar, said CLUeS’s Wilmar CDL program had a 100 percent completion rate and that 75 percent of Wilmar participants secured employment at higher wages; Mendoza said program completers’ average wages rose from about $11–$11.50 to more than $21 after certification.
Committee action: The bill was laid over for possible inclusion. No roll-call vote was recorded; the committee took no final funding action at the hearing.
