Multiple public commenters urge county action on child-protection screenings and leadership accountability

During the public-comment period at the March 19 Health & Hospital Committee meeting, multiple speakers urged stronger county action on child-protection screenings and accountability.

An early speaker (identifying as a parent) described a string of recent child deaths and alleged cases of sexual and physical abuse that the speaker said were not adequately screened by county child-welfare services. The speaker named three children who died within a one-year span and called for removal of specific child-welfare leaders, asking the committee and County Executive James Williams to act.

A later public commenter referenced federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) funding and said the county must meet CAPTA compliance standards to secure federal grants. That commenter repeated calls for removal of Daniel Little and Wendy Kinnear Rausch from leadership positions in the child-welfare system, asserting that screening and accountability failures continue.

Committee members did not take action on the public comments during the meeting. County staff and the county executive were asked to note the comments and provide any appropriate follow-up through the public record.
