City Council remanded Old Fort Eustis Boulevard rezoning; Planning Commission to rehear

Sheila McAllister, the planning commission’s executive secretary, told commissioners that City Council on March 11 reconsidered a request to change zoning from R‑4 (single-family) to R‑7 (medium density) for properties at 628 and 634 Old Fort Eustis Boulevard and remanded the application back to the Planning Commission.
McAllister said the application will be amended and that applicants plan to hold community meetings before the matter returns to the commission. She also cautioned commissioners to review the City Council video of the reconsideration for background and said traffic and rear-yard buffering were among concerns raised by residents.
Commissioners discussed how to handle constituent calls and the importance of making public-record procedures clear; a member noted that staff (McAllister and planning office staff) can answer technical questions and that commissioners should avoid off-the-record discussions about cases that will return to the commission.
