Committee advances AB 509 on technology-based ID verification for alcohol service

The Assembly Governmental Organization Committee advanced Assembly Bill 509, authored by Assemblymember Flora, to the Appropriations Committee after the sponsor agreed to committee amendments.
Flora told the committee she accepted the committee's amendments and asked members for an "I" vote. "I accept the committee's amendments and appreciate all your support and your time on that, and respectfully ask for an I vote," Flora said during the hearing.
Industry representatives spoke in support. "We are in strong support of the bill," Matt Sutton of the California Restaurant Association told the committee, adding that restaurants already maintain alcohol-service training and that the bill clarifies responsibilities when verification technology is used.
Committee members recorded a motion to pass AB 509 as amended to the Appropriations Committee. The clerk announced 14 recorded votes at the moment the vote was announced; the roll was left open for absent members. No formal opposition was recorded in the hearing.
AB 509 now proceeds to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for further consideration.
