Kootenai County commissioners discussed a central-committee sign-up sheet on March 19 to manage longstanding permission for political central committees to use a meeting room in the county administration building.
Commissioner Leslie Duncan said both the Republican and Democratic central committees have had permission to use the room for at least a decade, and county practice requires a county employee to open and close the meeting so the building is secured. Because only one current county employee who serves on a central committee can perform openings and closings, Duncan asked other county employees who work on campus to volunteer on a sign-up sheet to share the responsibility.
Staff clarified that the Democratic central committee has not used the county building since COVID, but the practice remains in policy; the board noted that sign-up should be available to any county employee who is on the central committee or who reserves the room for meetings that have a nexus to county business.
Commissioners said they saw no reason to change the longstanding arrangement but asked staff to circulate and maintain the sign-up sheet and to ensure meeting organizers follow building open/close procedures.
