The Yuba City City Council appointed an ad hoc committee — Mayor Dave Shaw and Vice Mayor Boomgaarden — to meet with Adventist Health leadership to discuss Project Hope and other community concerns, and to clarify reports circulating on social media.
Vice Mayor Boomgaarden said he sought a formal channel for dialogue rather than pursuing commentary on social media. He said some community members have reported changes or cancellations related to Project Hope and other hospital activities, and the ad hoc would seek factual updates and a fuller explanation of Adventist Health’s activities in the region.
Mayor Shaw said he and Boomgaarden had discussed the proposal with Adventist representatives. According to council remarks, Chris Champlin of Adventist Health indicated a willingness to meet and asked that the ad hoc provide any specific questions in advance; council staff also reported that Adventist intends to bring a general update to the full council in May. A member of the public who spoke during general comment recommended the council also meet informally with other local medical providers and consider coordinating with the Hubisutter Healthcare Council.
A motion to appoint the mayor and the vice mayor as the ad hoc committee to meet with Adventist Health was moved, seconded and carried by the council. The ad hoc is to schedule meetings in the coming weeks and report back to the full council.
