Olathe council asks staff to review Johnson County transit draft after proposed microtransit cuts

Council Member Vaca raised concerns on March 18 about a Johnson County transit study that, in draft form, would shrink the countys microtransit service area and largely eliminate Olathe from the on-demand service area.
"My quandary is, why am I paying taxes for a transit authority that the county provides when they cut out Olathe?" Council Member Vaca said, urging staff to gather more information and consider a letter to the county commission expressing the council’s concerns.
City Manager Watkins and staff told the council the county plan is still in draft form and open to limited input. Watkins said county officials had previously been scheduled to present to the council but cancelled because of weather; staff indicated they would seek additional information and work to invite county representatives to brief the council on the proposed changes.
Council members asked staff to obtain details about the proposed service-area reduction and to report back before any city-level advocacy is sent to the county commission. No formal motion or vote was recorded on the matter at the meeting.
