Board approves change order and insurance appropriation to repair hail-damaged city buildings

The Fort Smith Board of Directors voted March 18 to approve a contract change order and to appropriate insurance proceeds to repair additional city buildings damaged by February hail.
Chief Financial Officer Andy Richards said crews discovered previously unnoticed hail damage to an additional facility — the senior activity/senior citizen center at Kavanaugh — and recommended adding that building to the existing roofing contract with Dale Cramping Roofing. Richards described insurance proceeds already received (about $183,000) and asked the board to authorize additional appropriation to cover the change order, which totals roughly $266,000 for the added facility’s repairs.
No members of the public signed up to speak on this item. The board moved, seconded and approved the ordinance and resolution authorizing the appropriation and the change order by roll call.
The measure directs staff to work with the insurance adjuster to recover the full amount due and to execute the change order so repairs can proceed.
