The author said the DE1 amendment corrected dates and removed a duplicative reporting requirement. "The DE1 that you just put on just corrects the dates ... and removes the report because school districts already report this information to MDE," Representative Joakim said.
Why it matters: Under current state law Minnesota school districts generally start after Labor Day unless they meet certain exemptions (for example, a construction project over $400,000, coordinated schedules with an adjoining state, or a qualified flexible learning year). Advocates for the bill told the committee that Labor Day falls unusually late in 2026 and 2027 (Sept. 7 and Sept. 6, respectively) and a late start compresses instructional time, pushes end dates into June and increases the risk of schedule disruption from winter weather.
