The Board of Mayor and Aldermen on March 18 authorized the mayor to execute all documents necessary to apply for a Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant through the Office of Outdoor Recreation. The application would seek roughly $6.5 million; the city would be responsible for a 50% local match if awarded.
City staff and councilors described a package of potential uses for the grant funds, including installing artificial turf at Brickyard Park, expanding Miracle Field amenities, plaza and lighting improvements, and habitat and trail upgrades at Bays Mountain. Staff said the package reflects planning and prior grant work, including master plans and the recent LPRF grant that helped shape current priorities.
Board members praised staff work to assemble projects and noted the scale of potential funding. The city manager and board members said staff have pursued major grant opportunities over several years and that these awards have accelerated capital projects that otherwise might not progress at the same pace.
City staff emphasized the 50% local match and said the application does not obligate the city to a final commitment until awards are confirmed and the board sets appropriations in the capital budget. The board approved the resolution to proceed with the application by voice vote, 6–0.
