Council approves $62,975 Meridian/60 Ninth roundabout welcome sign design

City staff and sign vendor representatives presented a proposed illuminated “Hornet”-themed welcome sign to be placed in the 60 Ninth and Meridian roundabout and asked the council to authorize the design and installation contract.
A vendor representative described the concept as a three-dimensional, 18-foot-tall, 7-foot-wide aluminum sign with a “hive” pattern meant to be visible from all directions in the roundabout and to be lit at night. The project team said the sign would be sited within the roundabout interior, set back from the driving lanes with landscape and curb buffers, and would include lighting coordinated with Evergy; staff said conduit for irrigation and electricity was already included in the Meridian project contract.
Council members raised safety and maintenance questions about size, semi-trailer clearance, wind/tornado resistance and the timing of installation relative to roundabout construction. Staff said the sign will be engineered for anchored installation, that insurance would cover damage from severe weather, and that installation would be coordinated with the roundabout contractor toward the end of the street project so the sign would be in place before the roadway reopened.
The council moved to approve the proposed design and installation of the sign at the 60 Ninth and Meridian roundabout in the amount of $62,974.86 and authorized the mayor or city administrator to sign the contract with Miracle Signs.
Why this matters: the sign is funded from the Meridian Avenue project budget and represents a visible investment in downtown identity; council debated placement, lighting, safety and coordination with the larger Meridian Avenue contract.
Staff said two earlier entryway signs had cost about $33,000 each and that ongoing maintenance and insurance considerations apply. The motion passed by voice vote.
